A renter's guide to Tököl
Tököl is on the south-western side of Csepel Island, below Szigethalom and Halásztelek, with about 10,000 people. It is one of the older settlements on the island, with Rác and Croatian roots that still show in the church, the family names and the feast days, and an old village core of long plots and single-storey houses that the newer streets have grown around. To the west is the old Tököl airfield, a former Soviet air base that is now a small general aviation field and a lot of empty runway, with a block estate beside it that was built for the base.
It is a quieter, more village-like town than its northern neighbours, with the Soroksár Danube on the east side and the main Danube a few kilometres to the west. The H6 stops here, which is what makes it a commuter option at all; without it Tököl would be too far. Rents are among the lowest on the island, and most of what is let is a house with a garden.

Getting around
- HÉV H6 from Tököl to Közvágóhíd in about 55 to 60 minutes, then tram 2 or 24 to the centre; count 75 to 80 minutes to Deák tér. Trains every 20 minutes in the peak, every 30 to 60 minutes off-peak and at weekends.
- Volánbusz up the island through Szigethalom to Szigetszentmiklós and Csepel, and across to Halásztelek; the bus to the H7 at Csepel is the fallback when the H6 is on replacement buses.
- By car: the M0 interchange at Szigetszentmiklós is 15 to 20 minutes, so the M5 and the M6 side are 30 to 40 minutes; Csepel and the Rákóczi bridge take 35 minutes off-peak and well over an hour in the morning.
- Cycling to Szigethalom is 10 minutes and to Szigetszentmiklós 20 to 25 on flat roads.
- Near the HÉV stop you can just about manage without a car; everywhere else in Tököl people drive.
What the homes are like
Houses first: old village houses on long plots in the centre, some renovated well and some not, 1970s to 1990s family houses on the streets behind, and newer detached builds on the edges. The one exception is the block estate by the airfield, four-storey 1970s buildings where two-room flats come up regularly at the lowest prices on the island; one-room flats are rare there and almost nonexistent elsewhere, so treat the figure as a guide. A typical kiadó ház is two or three bedrooms with a garden, often with an outbuilding and a vegetable patch the owner would like you to keep.
In the old houses check the heating, the damp and the windows, and ask whether the house is on the town sewer. On the estate, ask about the heating bill and the state of the stairwell. Everywhere, ask who pays the waste fee and what the garden expectations are; owners here usually let directly and are open to a longer lease at a lower rent.
Who it suits
People who want a house with a garden at the lowest rent on the island and are happy with an hour and a quarter to the centre, families who work in the southern towns, and anyone who likes a village with real history rather than a new estate. Not suited to anyone who needs a flat, a fast commute or a life without a car.

- The old core around the Catholic church and the main street, with the long plots, the Rác and Croatian heritage and the single-storey houses; the shops and the schools are here.
- Lakótelep
- The block estate on the western side by the airfield, built for the base, with four-storey buildings and the cheapest two-room flats on the island.
- Repülőtér
- The old airfield and the land around it on the western edge, mostly empty, with a small aviation field, workshops and new houses creeping in on the town side.
- Kis-Duna-part
- The eastern streets along the Soroksár Danube towards Szigethalom, with summer houses, boat clubs and the bank; the greenest part and the furthest from the HÉV.
