A renter's guide to Szigethalom
Szigethalom is the next town south of Szigetszentmiklós on Csepel Island, with about 17,000 people, and from the HÉV window you cannot tell where one ends and the other begins. It was a part of Szigetszentmiklós until 1950 and it still reads as its continuation: a grid of family-house streets between the main island road and the Soroksár Danube, a modest centre around the Szigethalom stop with the town hall, the schools and the shops, and a second cluster around Szigethalom alsó further south.
The Kis-Duna side is the pleasant part, with boat clubs, a bank path and the Emese park, a living-history village on the river that draws school trips and weekend visitors. The rest is houses, gardens and quiet streets, a little cheaper and a little slower than Szigetszentmiklós, and with two HÉV stops it has a better commute than the towns on the far side of the island.

Getting around
- HÉV H6 from Szigethalom or Szigethalom alsó to Közvágóhíd in about 45 to 55 minutes, then tram 2 or 24 to the centre; count 70 minutes to Deák tér. Trains every 20 minutes, more in the morning peak; the two stops split the town so most streets are within 15 minutes' walk of one.
- Volánbusz up the island to Szigetszentmiklós and Csepel, and across to Tököl and Halásztelek; the bus to Csepel and the H7 is the alternative when the H6 is on replacement buses.
- By car: the M0 interchange at Szigetszentmiklós is 10 to 15 minutes, so the M5, M6 and M1 side are 25 to 35 minutes; Csepel and the Rákóczi bridge take 30 minutes off-peak and over an hour in the morning.
- Cycling to Szigetszentmiklós is 10 to 15 minutes on flat roads; the Kis-Duna bank path runs north along the water.
- Near either HÉV stop you can manage without a car; on the outer streets and the Duna side most households drive.
What the homes are like
Houses, nearly all of them: 1960s to 1990s detached family houses on the grid, newer detached and semi-detached builds on the southern and eastern edges, and converted summer houses along the river. The centre has a few small apartment buildings and the odd two-room flat comes up near the Szigethalom stop, but one-room flats barely exist, so the figure here is a guide. A typical kiadó ház is two or three bedrooms with a garden, a carport and gas heating, sometimes with a separate small flat or an outbuilding the owner keeps for storage.
Check the heating and the sewer connection, ask whether the garden and the waste fee are your job or the owner's, and look at the plot: the streets nearest the river are low and older summer houses were not built for winter. Houses within walking distance of either HÉV stop let quickly; the far streets sit for longer and are where you can negotiate.
Who it suits
Families who want a house with a garden and a train, people who work in Szigetszentmiklós or along the M0, and anyone who finds Szigetszentmiklós too busy or too expensive but wants the same commute. Less suited to someone who needs a flat, a walkable centre or a fast trip to northern Buda.

Is Szigethalom cheaper than Szigetszentmiklós?
A little, for the same house: count on 10 to 15 percent less for a comparable three-bedroom, and more choice at the lower end. The trade is 10 minutes longer on the HÉV and fewer flats.
What is the Emese park in Szigethalom?
A reconstructed early Hungarian settlement on the Kis-Duna bank, used for school trips, craft days and weekend events. For a tenant it mostly means the riverside streets around it are the town's green quarter and get some visitor traffic on summer weekends.
