A renter's guide to Szigetszentmiklós
Szigetszentmiklós is the largest town on Csepel Island, directly south of district XXI, with about 40,000 people and still growing. It is where the island stops being Budapest and becomes Pest county, though from the road you barely notice: the main road up the island runs straight into Csepel, and the M0 ring road cuts across the northern edge with its own interchange. The town has an old village core around the church and the market, a centre with a few panel blocks and shops, and around them a wide belt of family houses and new terraced estates that has been filling up for twenty years.
Two things define it: the HÉV, which stops several times in the town and is the daily link to the city, and the industrial park on the former Csepel truck factory site by the Gyártelep stop, where a lot of the island works. Lakihegy in the north is known for the radio mast that you can see from half the county; Bucka in the south has the lake and the newest streets; the Soroksár Danube side is quieter and greener.

Getting around
- HÉV H6 from Szigetszentmiklós, Szigetszentmiklós-Gyártelep or Szigetszentmiklós alsó to Közvágóhíd in about 35 to 45 minutes, then tram 2 or 24 to the centre; count 60 to 65 minutes to Deák tér. Trains every 20 minutes, more in the morning peak.
- Volánbusz up the island to Csepel and the Csepel end of the H7 HÉV, and to Kőbánya-Kispest via the M0; useful when the H6 is on replacement buses.
- By car: the M0 Szigetszentmiklós interchange is on the northern edge, so the M5, the M1 and the M6 side are all 15 to 25 minutes; Csepel and the Rákóczi bridge into the city take 25 minutes off-peak and an hour in the morning.
- Cycling to Csepel is flat and about 20 minutes on the island roads; the Kis-Duna bank path continues north into district XXI.
- Near a HÉV stop you can live without a car; in Lakihegy, Bucka and the outer streets nearly every household has one.
What the homes are like
The widest choice in the island towns: 1960s to 1990s family houses on the grid streets, new terraced and semi-detached estates in Bucka and towards the M0, a few panel blocks and newer apartment buildings in the centre, and converted summer houses on the Duna side. One and two-room flats exist here in a way they do not further down the island, mostly in the centre and near the Gyártelep, so a single renter has options; the rest of the market is kiadó ház, usually two or three bedrooms with a garden and a parking place.
Check the heating in anything older, ask whether the house is on the town sewer or a tank, and look at the M0 on the map: the streets closest to it are noisy day and night. New terraced estates often come with a shared yard and a management fee, so ask what is on top of the rent.
Who it suits
Families and couples who want a house with a garden and a train, people who work in the industrial park or along the M0, and anyone priced out of Csepel who still wants to be on the island. Less suited to someone who wants a walkable town centre with life in the evenings, or who works in the north of the city, where the trip is long by every route.

- The former truck factory and today's industrial park around the Gyártelep stop, and behind it the streets along the Soroksár Danube with boat clubs and converted summer houses.

Are there flats to rent in Szigetszentmiklós or only houses?

Is Szigetszentmiklós noisy because of the M0?
