A renter's guide to Százhalombatta
Százhalombatta is a Danube town about twenty-five kilometres south-west of the centre, just below Érd and separated from district XXII by it. It does not touch Budapest directly. The town was built almost from scratch in the 1960s around the MOL Danube refinery and the Dunamenti power station, which is why the centre is a planned grid of panel and brick blocks with wide streets, a big sports hall and more green space than most estates in the city. The industry is still the largest employer, and its skyline is visible from most of the town.
Two older layers survive beside the new town: the Óváros on the bank of the Danube, with village houses and a Serbian Orthodox church, and the Bronze Age earthwork and Roman-era finds shown in the Matrica Museum and the Archaeological Park. The Danube bank and the thermal bath are the everyday assets. Schools, a clinic, a cultural centre and supermarkets are all in town; the town is well equipped for its size because of the industrial tax base.

Getting around
- By car: the M6 to the M0 and into Budapest, or route 6 through Érd. Kelenföld is about 30 minutes off-peak and 45 to 60 in the morning rush; the M0 southern section is the bottleneck.
- Train on the Pusztaszabolcs line from Százhalombatta station: about 25 minutes to Kelenföld and 35 to Déli, two to three trains an hour at peak.
- Volánbusz from Kelenföld (Etele tér) via Érd, 40 to 50 minutes, useful for the parts of town far from the station.
- A car helps but is not strictly necessary if you live near the station and work on the Buda side.
What the homes are like
Unlike most towns in this ring, Százhalombatta has a proper flat market. The centre is 1960s to 1980s panel and brick blocks, mostly one and a half to three rooms, 35 to 70 square metres, many renovated, with lifts in the taller ones and district heating from the power station in much of the estate. This is where the affordable one- and two-room lets are. Detached houses with gardens are in the Óváros, in Dunafüred by the river and in the Urbárium area, and they are cheaper than the same house in Érd.
Check whether a panel flat has had its windows and insulation upgraded, and ask for the last year of district heating bills; they vary a lot between renovated and untouched buildings.
Who it suits
People who want a cheap flat with a train to Kelenföld, workers at the refinery or the power station, and families who want a house near the river at a low rent. It suits people who like a planned, spacious town. It does not suit anyone who wants an old town centre with cafés, or a short trip to the Pest side.

The refinery and the power station are on the northern edge and visible from most of town. Air quality is monitored and published; on some days there is a smell. Most residents treat it as background, but rent on the northern side if it matters to you.
Are there cheap flats in Százhalombatta?
Yes, this is one of the few towns in the ring with a real supply of panel and brick flats. One- and two-room flats in the centre are well below Budapest prices and often renovated.
Do I need a car in Százhalombatta?
Not if you live near the station and commute to Buda. For the Óváros, Dunafüred or a job elsewhere in the county a car is much easier.
