A renter's guide to Érd
Érd is a city of about 70 000, the largest in the Budapest ring and larger than most Hungarian county towns, spread over hills that run down to the Danube south-west of district XXII. It became a city late and it shows: there is no single historic centre, rather a working centre around Budai út and Diósdi út with the town hall, the Érd Aréna sports hall, the Stop.Shop retail park, the market and the bus station, and then square kilometres of house streets in every direction.
The parts have their own names and characters. Parkváros on the northern plateau is the largest and greenest, with many newer houses; Érdliget to the east is older, with its own station and a lakeside; Ófalu by the Danube is the original village with the Turkish-era minaret and the river; the centre and Tusculanum around it are the densest. Distances inside Érd are large, and buses between the parts are slower than the train into Budapest.
It is the place people go for a house with a garden at the lowest prices this close to the city, and for a straightforward car commute: the M6 begins here, the M7 passes the northern edge, the M0 is minutes away. Schools, kindergartens, a hospital-scale clinic, a pool and supermarkets are all in town.

Getting around
- MÁV trains from Érd felső (Székesfehérvár line) to Kelenföld in 20 to 25 minutes and Déli in 30; from Érd alsó and Érdliget (Pécs line) to Kelenföld in 20 to 30. With the M4 from Kelenföld, Deák is 45 to 60 minutes door to door.
- Volánbusz buses from the Érd bus station and along Budai út to Kelenföld in 30 to 45 minutes, and to Diósd, Budaörs and Százhalombatta.
- Local buses connect Parkváros, Érdliget, Ófalu and the centre to the stations; count on 15 to 25 minutes between the parts.
- By car: Kelenföld in 20 to 30 minutes on the M7 or the 7-es főút, the city centre in 40 to 60; the M6, M7 and M0 junctions are at the city edges.
What the homes are like
Houses are the market, and the choice is the widest in the agglomeration: old village houses in Ófalu and along Budai út, 1970s and 1980s two-storey houses on 700 to 1 000 square metre plots everywhere, many split into two flats with separate entrances, and newer detached and semi-detached houses in Parkváros and on the Érdliget edges. A three-room listing is a house, usually with a garage or gate parking and a real garden; rents are a clear step below Budaörs and Diósd for the same size.
Flats exist near the centre in a few 1970s four-storey blocks and in newer small condominiums, 45 to 70 square metres, gas or district heating, and are the cheapest flats in the western ring. With houses ask about insulation and heating type (many still run on gas convectors), the age of the roof, whether the street is paved and on mains sewerage, and the distance to the nearest station, since that decides whether the commute works without a car.
Who it suits
Érd suits families who want a whole house and garden on a budget that would not cover a two-room flat in Buda, people with a car who commute along the M7 or M6, and anyone working in the industrial zones of the south-west. It suits less well someone without a car or who needs the centre of Budapest daily, though the train from Érd felső or Érdliget makes it possible if you live within walking distance of a station.

- Érd centre and Tusculanum
- Budai út and Diósdi út: the town hall, the arena, the retail park, the market, the bus station and Érd felső station nearby. The densest part with the most flats and services.
- Parkváros
- The large northern plateau of house streets with many newer builds, schools and its own small centres. Green and quiet, car needed for the station.
- Érdliget
- The eastern part toward Diósd with older houses, a lake, its own station on the Pécs line and the shortest train ride. A good base for a rail commute.
- Ófalu
- The old village by the Danube with the minaret, the river bank and older houses on long plots. The most character and the most distance from the motorways.

Is Érd a good place to live for families?
It is where many Budapest families go when they want a house and a garden without an inner-Buda budget. Schools, kindergartens, a pool and a large clinic are in town, and the M6, M7 and M0 make driving easy. The trade-off is size: the city is spread out, and daily life runs on a car.
How long does it take to get from Érd to Budapest?
By train, 20 to 25 minutes from Érd felső or Érdliget to Kelenföld and 30 to Déli; with the M4 metro that is 45 to 60 minutes to Deák. By car the M7 reaches Kelenföld in 20 to 30 minutes and the centre in 40 to 60 in normal traffic.
How much is it to rent a house in Érd?
A three-room house with a garden typically asks 250 000 to 420 000 forints a month, newer houses in Parkváros at the upper end. Halves of split houses and two-room flats near the centre run from about 180 000 to 260 000, which is the cheapest in the western ring.
Do I need a car in Érd?
Almost certainly. The city covers a large area, buses between the parts are slow, and shops and schools are spread out. If you live within walking distance of Érd felső or Érdliget station you can commute by train without a car, but you will still want one for everything else.
