A renter's guide to Dunaharaszti
Dunaharaszti is the first town south of district XXIII, continuing straight on from Soroksár along route 51 and the Soroksár branch of the Danube. It has about 22,000 people, an old centre with the Catholic church and the main street, a long riverside with boat clubs and summer houses, and family-house quarters that fill the space between the river, the railway and the M0. Taksony continues to the south; across the water is Csepel Island and Szigetszentmiklós.
It is one of the best-connected towns in the south: the HÉV, a MÁV line and route 51 all run through it, and the M0 southern sector crosses the river here on its way to the M5. The river is the pleasant part, a slow arm of the Danube used for rowing, fishing and swimming, with a bank path that runs for kilometres. The rest is a working commuter town with an industrial zone along the road to Alsónémedi.

Getting around
- HÉV H6 from Dunaharaszti felső or Dunaharaszti külső to Közvágóhíd in about 25 to 30 minutes, then tram 2 or 24 or bus to the centre; count 50 minutes to Deák tér. Trains every 20 minutes, more in the peak.
- MÁV line 150 from Dunaharaszti station to Keleti in about 30 minutes via Ferencváros, roughly hourly with extra peak trains.
- Volánbusz along route 51 to Soroksár and Pesterzsébet, and south to Taksony and Dunavarsány.
- By car: the M0 Dunaharaszti exit at route 51 is on the northern edge; the M5 is 10 minutes, the M6 and M1 side 20 to 25. Route 51 and Soroksári út into district IX take 30 minutes off-peak and 50 to 70 in the morning.
- Near the HÉV you can manage without a car; along the river and on the outer streets most people drive.
What the homes are like
Mostly detached houses: old village houses in the centre, 1970s to 1990s family houses in Rákócziliget and the streets behind the river, and new detached and terraced builds on the southern and eastern edges. There is more variety than in the island towns because Dunaharaszti has a few small block estates and newer apartment buildings near the centre, so two-room flats appear regularly and one-room flats occasionally. Riverside houses come with a premium and sometimes with a boat mooring.
By the river, ask about flooding and damp; the bank streets are on low ground and the older summer houses were not built for winter. Everywhere, check the heating and the sewer connection, and ask whether the waste fee is in the rent. Anything within ten minutes of a HÉV stop is let quickly, so be ready to decide at the viewing.
Who it suits
People who want a house near water with three ways into the city, families who work in the southern districts or along the M0 and M5, and rowers and cyclists. Less suited to someone who wants a compact town centre, or who works in northern Buda, where the trip is long by any route.

- The streets along the Soroksár Danube with boat clubs, summer houses turned homes and the bank path; the most sought-after and the dampest.
- Taksony
- The next village south along the river and route 51, smaller, with a MÁV station and lower rents; many Dunaharaszti searches spill over into it.

How long is the HÉV from Dunaharaszti to the city?
About 25 to 30 minutes to Közvágóhíd, then tram or bus into the centre, so around 50 minutes to Deák tér. The MÁV train to Keleti is a similar 30 minutes but runs less often.
Can you swim in the river at Dunaharaszti?
The Soroksár Danube arm is slow and used for rowing, fishing and swimming in summer from the club banks and beaches, though water quality varies. The bank path is used for walking and cycling all year.
Does Dunaharaszti flood?
The arm is regulated, so serious flooding is rare, but the bank streets are low and can get groundwater and damp. Ask the owner directly about the cellar and the last high water before renting near the river.
