A renter's guide to Pomáz
Pomáz is a town of about seventeen thousand people between Budakalász and Szentendre, set back from the Danube against the first slopes of the Pilis, with the Kő-hegy rising directly above it and the road to Dobogókő and the Pilis villages starting here. It does not touch Budapest; Budakalász lies between it and district III. Serbs settled the town in the 17th century and their Orthodox church still stands in the centre, alongside a Swabian and Hungarian heritage that shows in the older streets.
The town has the services of a proper small town: several primary schools, a secondary school, a health centre, a cultural centre, supermarkets, a market and a swimming pool, with Szentendre's shops and hospital five minutes away. Its appeal for renters is simple: the same HÉV line as Szentendre and Budakalász, a real town centre, and houses at the lowest prices on this line. The trails up the Kő-hegy and into the Pilis start at the top of the streets.

Getting around
- By car: route 11 through Budakalász into Óbuda, about 25 minutes off-peak and 45 to 60 minutes to Árpád híd in the morning rush; the M0 via the Megyeri bridge is the way to the Pest side.
- HÉV H5 from Pomáz: 38 to 40 minutes to Batthyány tér, every 10 to 20 minutes at peak, with the change to metro 2 there.
- Volánbusz on route 11 to Árpád híd in 40 to 50 minutes, and buses from the HÉV station into the Pilis villages and up to Dobogókő.
- A car helps for the hillside streets and the Pilis; a HÉV commute from the flatter part of town works without one.
What the homes are like
Houses make up most of the market: old village houses in the centre, 1970s to 1990s family houses on the grid of streets between the centre and the HÉV, and newer detached homes on the slopes towards the Kő-hegy and in Messelia. There are also flats, more than in the villages: a small estate of 1970s and 1980s blocks near the centre, a few brick blocks along the main road and some newer small developments, mostly one and a half to three rooms. This is where the cheaper flats on the Szentendre line are.
Heating is gas nearly everywhere, with some older houses on wood. On the slopes check the drive in winter and the state of the road; near the centre ask about noise from route 11.
Who it suits
People who want a house or a flat at the lower end of the HÉV line, a real town with schools and shops, and the Pilis on the doorstep. It suits families and anyone who hikes or cycles. It does not suit those who want Szentendre's old-town feel, or a short car commute to the centre in the morning.
