A renter's guide to Piliscsaba
Piliscsaba is about twenty-five kilometres north-west of the centre, the next settlement on route 10 and the Esztergom line after Pilisvörösvár. It does not border Budapest; Pilisvörösvár and Solymár lie between. The village spreads for several kilometres along the road and the railway under the Nagy-Kopasz hill, with forest on both sides, and it is the point where the Budapest commuter belt visibly thins out: plots get bigger, the traffic gets lighter and the houses sit further apart.
It is known for the university campus in Klotildliget, built in the 1990s for the Catholic university's arts faculty in a distinctive style by Imre Makovecz's circle; much of the teaching has since moved into Budapest, but the campus, the student housing and a few cafés remain. There is a primary school, kindergartens, a doctor, a pharmacy and small supermarkets; a bigger shop means Pilisvörösvár, ten minutes away. The forest around the village is part of the Duna-Ipoly National Park's Pilis area, and the walks are the reason many people live here.

Getting around
- By car: route 10 through Pilisvörösvár and Solymár to Óbuda, 35 minutes off-peak and 60 to 75 minutes to Árpád híd in the morning rush; the M0 via Pilisvörösvár and Üröm is an alternative for the Pest side.
- Train on the Esztergom line from Piliscsaba or Klotildliget station: 45 to 50 minutes to Nyugati, two trains an hour at peak, hourly otherwise.
- Volánbusz lines on route 10 to Árpád híd in 55 to 65 minutes, or to Pilisvörösvár in ten.
- A car is close to essential here; the train covers the commute, everything else needs wheels.
What the homes are like
The market is detached houses on large plots: old village houses in the centre, 1980s and 1990s family houses along the side streets, weekend houses converted to year-round living on the forest edge, and newer detached homes in Klotildliget and Magdolna-völgy. Flats are rare; those listed are usually a floor of a house, a converted student flat near the campus or one of the few small blocks near the station. Rents are among the lower ones on this side of the city, and listings are few but not scarce.
Heating is mostly gas, sometimes wood or a mixed system in older or forest-edge houses. Check the state of the road to the house in winter, whether the property is on mains water and sewage, and the heating cost of a large, older house.
Who it suits
People who want forest, space and low rent, drive or can work from home part of the week, and are fine with a fifty-minute train. It suits families with a car and anyone connected to the campus. It does not suit daily car commuters to the centre, or anyone who wants shops and cafés within a short walk.

Do I need a car in Piliscsaba?
Yes, unless your life is entirely the train to the city and the village shop. The settlement is long and spread out, the bigger shops are in Pilisvörösvár and the forest houses are up unpaved lanes.
Is the university still in Piliscsaba?
Partly. The campus in Klotildliget still stands and some activity remains, but most of the Catholic university's arts faculty moved into Budapest during the 2010s. Student demand for rooms is far lower than it once was.
Is Piliscsaba a cheap place to rent?
For the north-western side, yes. Houses ask less than in Solymár, Üröm or Pilisvörösvár, and the plots are larger. The price is the distance and the dependence on a car.
