A renter's guide to Kerepes
Kerepes is the next settlement after Kistarcsa on route 3 and on the Gödöllő HÉV, about 20 kilometres from the centre of Budapest with Mogyoród and the Hungaroring to its north. It is a village in shape, long and thin along the main road, that has grown into a town of roughly 10,000 through estates on the hills either side. Two parts feel distinct: the old Kerepes around the church, and Szilasliget to the west, a separate settlement in all but administration with its own HÉV stop.
The appeal is space. Plots are larger and cheaper than in Kistarcsa, the hills to the north are wooded, and the M31 passes the southern edge, so a driver is on the M3 in minutes. The cost is a slightly longer commute and a thinner set of shops: for a proper high street people go to Kistarcsa or Gödöllő.

Getting around
- HÉV H8 from Kerepes or Szilasliget to Örs vezér tere in about 30 to 35 minutes, then metro M2 to Deák tér in 13; roughly 50 to 55 minutes door to door.
- There is no railway station in Kerepes; for MÁV trains to Keleti people drive or take the HÉV to Gödöllő.
- Volánbusz along route 3 to Kistarcsa, district XVI and Örs vezér tere, and to Gödöllő the other way.
- By car: the M31 junction at the south end of the village links to the M3 and, via the M0, to the whole ring; 20 minutes to the M3 city edge off-peak, 45 to 60 minutes to the centre in the morning.
- A car is close to necessary on the hill streets; near the two HÉV stops you can manage without one for a city job.
What the homes are like
Almost everything to rent is a house. The village core has single-storey houses on long plots; the hillside streets have 1980s to 2010s family houses, many with basements and garages, and Szilasliget has a grid of 1960s to 1990s houses with gardens around its stop. A few small apartment buildings and terraced rows have been added near the main road, which is where the rare two-room flats come from. A one-room flat here is usually a self-contained annexe or a floor of a house with its own entrance.
Check the road: several streets on the hills are unpaved or steep and turn to mud in winter. Ask about the boiler and the water heater, whether the garden is the tenant's to keep, and whether the rent includes the waste fee. Older houses often have single glazing, which shows in the gas bill.
Who it suits
People who want more land for their money and still a HÉV, families with a car who work in the eastern or northern districts, and anyone at the Hungaroring, Gödöllő or in the logistics parks along the M31 and M0. Not for people without a car on the hillside estates, or anyone who wants a town centre with cafés.

- The old village along route 3 around the church and the Kerepes HÉV stop; the oldest houses and the bus and train connections in one place.

- The wooded hillside north of the main road with newer, larger houses, views towards Mogyoród and steep, sometimes unpaved streets.
- Hollandia-telep
- A residential quarter on the south side towards the M31, built out from the 1990s; detached houses with gardens and the fastest road to the motorway.

How do I get from Kerepes to Budapest?
The H8 HÉV from Kerepes or Szilasliget reaches Örs vezér tere in 30 to 35 minutes, and the M2 metro runs on to Deák tér. By car the M31 joins the M3 in a few minutes; the whole trip to the centre is under half an hour at night and about an hour in the morning rush.
Is Kerepes cheaper than Kistarcsa?
A little, for similar houses, and noticeably for land. The commute is 5 to 10 minutes longer and there are fewer flats, which is what keeps the difference.
What is Szilasliget?
The western half of Kerepes, which grew from a summer-house colony into a residential quarter with its own HÉV stop and school. Many listings name it separately, so search for both.
